Located just metres from the Otago Central Rail Trail, the Omakau Commercial Hotel was built in 1898 by William Leask as Omakau’s first homestead then accommodation house for weary travellers.
The Hotel is available for any of your dining requirements, 362 days a year. Our Chefs pride themselves on their flavour and presentation – we invite you to look at our Dining page for some mouth-watering temptations. We have a wonderful selection of wine and beer available from our bar to quench your thirst, and/or to compliment your meal.

Located at the back of the Hotel, are the original schist stables which were built around 1880 to house Mr Leask’s horses when he farmed the land the hotel now stands on. You may have already seen them without knowing – this is where Speight’s filmed their “Good On Ya Mate” adverts – the most memorable being “The Two Tickets to the Ball.

The Omakau Commercial Hotel is located on the Corner of Harvey Street and the Main Road (SH 85) in the heart of Omakau. If you are cycling the Rail Trail, turn right into Harvey Street, and we are located on your right hand side, approximately 150 metres from the Otago Central Rail Trail.

Cancellation Policy

Once people make a reservation with us, room(s) are held for their exclusive occupation. We do not have a policy of overbooking and guarantee your reservation. Due to the nature of our business, cancellations affect us significantly so during our peak season of October to May, a minimum of 5 days’ notice from check in time is required to avoid any cancellation fees.
